5 tips for New Project Managers
Being a successful project manager needs you to have the natural abilities and skills of being a tactical problem solver as well as have a deep understanding of human behavior. So, if you have decided to venture out into the brave world of project management, here are 5 tips to pave your way:
- Listen, learn & engage –
Being fresh in the game gives you the time to soak information up before deliverables are expected out of you. Take this time to pay attention to the structure of your team and its dynamics; study your clients and customers; recognize the strengths of your teammates etc. Take those learnings and engage with your team members and other stakeholders to achieve project success. The more you have on your side from the very beginning, the better are your chances of success.
- Always solve problems –
Don’t make the mistake of starting execution and worry about delivery before you have analyzed all the dependencies and identified all the risks. Be a pre-emptive problem solver in terms of your contribution to the team. If a project decides to go awry, investigate the what, why, where of the failure and learn from it.
- Be an efficient team player –
Being a team player means you should not shy away from asking for help when you need it. You need to do what is in the best interest of the project as well as learn how to optimize your team members’ expertise. Be a transparent problem solver and percolate that ideology in your team so that they can help spot potential trouble before it is too late.
- Know your clients –
Always know your customers, clients and their organizations. Understand your customers’ goals and mission, their preferred modes of communication and what are the most important values for them. Learn how they like to deal with change, conflict and problems. This gives your clients immense confidence in your abilities.
- Know your project management tools –
Irrespective of the simplicity of the tool you are using (it may just a project scheduler) or the complexity of a collaborative project manager software; it it extremely important to know the tool inside out. Get the right training and certifications. Find ways to optimize the tool and its usage and promote the usage amongst your team.
