5 principles of Agile Leadership
Teams of all natures – agile software development or otherwise – need inspirational leadership to perform their best. That leadership may, or may not, come from the organisation’s appointed leaders. But all teams need it, nevertheless. As the enabler for the teams, the ultimate responsibility for adoption, success, and ongoing improvement of Lean-Agile development lies with the Enterprise , existing managers, leaders, and executives. Only they can change and continuously improve the systems in which everyone operates. To achieve this, leaders must be trained, and become trainers, in these leaner ways of thinking and operating. Many need to offer a new style of leadership, one that truly teaches, empowers, and engages individuals and teams to reach their highest potential.
Here are 5 Principles of Agile Leadership
Lead the way – Exhibit the urgency, communicate the urgency, build the plan, manage the process. Have clarity of vision and the ability to share it with others. Exhibit relentless determination, strong self-belief along with humility.
Develop people – focus on developing skills and career paths for team members. Encourage them to build lasting relationships with customers, vendors and other team members.
Value-based teams – Create and promote self organising and self managing teams. Give them a safety net to encourage learning and growth with peace of mind.
Feedback & reflection – Create an environment with regular use of feedback and reflection in order to think and learn.
Embrace change – Have the ability to drive, inspire and embrace change and continuous improvement. A positive attitude and lateral thinking mindset also helps to find innovative ideas and solutions to problems.
